Washington D.C. – Senator Lindsey Graham announced that the Republican Senate will focus on passing a major border security bill in 2025. This bill will aim to strengthen border control and increase deportations.
Graham, a key player in bipartisan immigration efforts, revealed the plan at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. He emphasized that the bill will prioritize increasing detention space, hiring more ICE agents, completing the border wall, and using technology to monitor the border.
“This will be our top priority,” Graham stated, adding that the bill will be fast-tracked through the reconciliation process. Many Republican lawmakers have expressed support for these efforts, which were also highlighted in their election campaigns.
While some deportation actions can be taken by the President, Congress can provide additional resources and change immigration laws to support these efforts. In 2023, Republicans passed a comprehensive border security bill in the House, but it stalled in the Senate, controlled by Democrats.
Democrats proposed a separate bipartisan border security bill, increasing funding for border agencies. However, Republicans opposed it, citing concerns it would legalize high levels of illegal immigration.
The border security bill is expected to dominate the 2025 legislative agenda, reflecting the ongoing debate over immigration policy in the United States.
