Chicago January 10, 2025

Vice President-elect JD Vance has announced his resignation from the Ohio Senate seat, effective midnight tonight. Vance will take the oath of office alongside President-elect Donald Trump on January 20, marking a new chapter in his career.

In a statement, Vance expressed his gratitude to the people of Ohio, saying it was a “tremendous honor and privilege” to serve them. He also pledged to support President Trump’s agenda, stating that together, they will make America “stronger, safer, and more prosperous than ever before.”

Vance’s resignation clears the way for Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to appoint a new Republican senator to join Senator Bernie Moreno. Several Republicans have expressed interest in the seat, with Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted emerging as a frontrunner.

Husted is reportedly weighing his options, considering whether to accept the appointment or pursue his original plan to run for governor in 2026. Governor DeWine has announced that an appointment will be made soon, but no timeline has been given.

Vance’s resignation marks the end of his two-year tenure in the US Senate. He will now focus on his new role as Vice President, working closely with President Trump to advance their agenda.
