Chicago March 1, 2025

With just over 10 days left before the federal government runs out of money on March 14, Democrats and Republicans in Congress are gearing up to blame each other for a potential partial government shutdown.

Rep. Greg Landsman, D-Ohio, recently wrote on X that Republicans, who control Congress, will bring a “worst budget bill ever” to the floor. Meanwhile, congressional Republicans are considering passing a short-term extension of last year’s federal funding, known as a continuing resolution (CR), while modifying it to align with President Donald Trump’s priorities.

However, Democrats are accusing Republicans of “walking away from bipartisan negotiations” and raising the risk of a shutdown. Top Democratic negotiators released a statement criticizing Republicans for abandoning talks.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole, R-Okla., reportedly said that Democrats’ demands were too high. Democratic lawmakers have been positioning to blame Republicans for the potential shutdown.
