Gopichand P. Hinduja, chairman of the Hinduja Group and one of Britain’s wealthiest businessmen, passed away in London at the age of 85 after a prolonged illness. Known globally as “GP,” he led the family conglomerate through decades of expansion and diversification.
He took charge of the Group in May 2023 after the death of his elder brother, Srichand Hinduja. Representing the second generation of the family, Gopichand was instrumental in turning the Hinduja business from a small Indo-Middle East trading venture into a global powerhouse spanning banking, energy, automotive, and media.
During his leadership, the Group made landmark acquisitions such as Gulf Oil in 1984 and Ashok Leyland in 1987, paving the way for greater non-resident Indian investment in India. Known for his quiet confidence and sharp business insight, Hinduja was also recognized internationally for his philanthropy and was awarded honorary doctorates by the University of Westminster and Richmond College.
Founded in 1919 by his father, Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja, the Group now employs more than 200,000 people across 30 countries. The family’s assets include major real estate holdings in London, such as the redeveloped Old War Office building, now Raffles London, and Carlton House Terrace near Buckingham Palace.
Gopichand is survived by his wife, Sunita, sons Sanjay and Dheeraj, and daughter Rita. His brothers Prakash and Ashok continue to oversee the Group’s operations abroad and in India. Gopichand Hinduja’s passing marks the end of an era for one of India’s most influential business dynasties.
