House Speaker Mike Johnson has stepped up efforts to revoke visas of individuals supporting Hamas, following the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and Columbia University alumnus. Khalil, a lawful permanent resident, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on allegations of engaging in activities aligned with Hamas, a designated terrorist organization.

Khalil’s arrest has sparked widespread protests and raised concerns about potential infringements on free speech and civil liberties. The Trump administration has underscored its commitment to combating antisemitism and terrorism, with President Trump labeling Khalil’s arrest as “the first of many” actions against individuals perceived to support Hamas.

A federal judge has temporarily blocked Khalil’s deportation, highlighting the legal complexities surrounding the case. Khalil’s legal team argues that his arrest is an attempt to suppress lawful activism and violates his First Amendment rights.
