Luigi Mangione, 26, has been charged with murder in connection to the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. The shooting occurred on December 4 outside a Hilton hotel in New York City. Thompson, 50, was shot from behind on the sidewalk just before a shareholder meeting.
Mangione faces multiple charges, including murder, criminal possession of a weapon (loaded firearm), possession of a forged document, and criminal possession of a firearm silencer. After five days on the run, Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Monday.
The arrest came after a tip from a McDonald’s employee and customer who recognized Mangione from a wanted poster. When police approached Mangione in the restaurant, he was wearing a mask and beanie, working on a laptop.
Upon asking him to remove his mask, officers identified him as the suspect. He handed over a fake ID and gave a false name when questioned. Police also found an unlicensed firearm on him. Initially, Mangione was charged with forgery, providing false identification, and illegal possession of a weapon, before being connected to Thompson’s murder.
