Chicago – January 09, 2025

On Thursday, House Republicans introduced a new bill to repurchase the Panama Canal, following President-elect Donald Trump’s concerns about China’s influence over the vital waterway.

The Panama Canal Repurchase Act was introduced by Representative Dusty Johnson from South Dakota, a member of the Select Committee on China and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Johnson explained that China’s growing interest in the canal is worrying. He stated, “America must project strength abroad – owning and operating the Panama Canal might be an important step towards a stronger America and a more secure globe.”

The bill has 15 other Republican co-sponsors, including Representatives from Texas, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Arizona, and New York.

However, the CEO of the Panama Canal has denied President-elect Trump’s claim that China controls or has taken over the canal.
