The Trump administration’s first major attempt at wartime diplomacy with Russia has ended in confusion. After requesting a 30-day, frontline-wide ceasefire without conditions, the US received a limited prisoner swap, hockey matches, and a month-long pause on attacks against “energy infrastructure”.
However, the agreement’s wording has created a technical minefield. The Kremlin agreed not to attack Ukraine’s electricity grids and gas supplies, but the White House extended this truce to potentially all Ukrainian infrastructure, including bridges, roads, ports, and railways.
This discrepancy has made it challenging for Russia to adhere to the agreement, as its air assaults resumed on Tuesday night. Moreover, Moscow’s concession on energy infrastructure attacks may be less significant with summer approaching and Ukraine’s heating needs decreasing.
