Chicago March 19, 2025

On March 17, 2025, a massive protest was held at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where thousands of Muslims gathered to voice their opposition to the proposed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The demonstration was organized by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and saw participation from various Muslim organizations, MPs, and community leaders.

The protesters are concerned that the Bill will give the government too much control over Waqf properties and allow non-Muslims to be appointed to Waqf boards. AIMPLB President Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani emphasized that the protest is not just about Waqf properties, but also about protecting the Indian Constitution.

Critics of the Bill, including AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, argue that it aims to create tension between communities and erode the political and religious identity of Muslims. Opposition MPs from parties like Congress, Trinamool Congress, and Samajwadi Party also expressed their dissent.

The protest highlighted the community’s fears about the Bill’s potential impact on their religious rights and properties. Leaders warned that if the government passes the legislation, nationwide demonstrations will follow, uniting citizens across religious lines to defend constitutional principles.
