New York Governor Kathy Hochul has officially endorsed Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani for mayor of New York City, marking a pivotal moment in the fiercely competitive race.
The endorsement comes amid Mamdani’s surge in the polls, where he currently leads with a significant margin over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and other contenders.
In an opinion piece published in The New York Times, Hochul acknowledged differences between her and Mamdani but praised his commitment to addressing the city’s affordability crisis.
“I heard a leader intent on making New York City more affordable—a goal I wholeheartedly endorse,” she wrote. Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist and state assemblyman, has captivated voters with progressive policies like rent freezes, free childcare, and city-run grocery stores.
Hochul’s support is seen as a critical boost for Mamdani, who has faced skepticism from some establishment Democrats. Her backing may also put pressure on other prominent Democrats in New York to rally behind Mamdani as Election Day approaches on November 4.
