Chicago – September 05, 2025

On Thursday, Governor Kathy Hochul and migrant support groups expressed concern after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents carried out raids in Cato and Fulton, New York. During these raids, more than 40 adults were detained, including several parents who left children at risk of returning home to an empty house. Governor Hochul called the raids “outrageous” in a statement, highlighting the impact on families.

The raids were part of a broader effort under President Donald Trump’s administration to target migrants, with ICE receiving significant funding to increase enforcement actions. While Trump has said the focus is on deporting criminals, ICE statistics show that more non-criminals have been detained in recent years.

Migrant advocacy group Rural & Migrant Ministry reported that more than 70 workers were arrested in an ICE raid at the Nutrition Bar Confectioners factory in Cato. The New York Times also reported the same figure, calling it one of the largest workplace raids in New York since Trump’s crackdown began.

An ICE spokesperson confirmed that the raids were part of “court-authorized enforcement actions.” Details about the raid in Fulton were not immediately available, but Governor Hochul emphasized that these actions will not make New York safer.
