President Joe Biden visited New Orleans on Monday to pay his respects to the families of the victims of the recent Bourbon Street attack. Fourteen people lost their lives when a man drove a truck into a crowd of pedestrians on New Year’s Day.
At an interfaith prayer service at St. Louis Cathedral, Biden expressed his condolences to the families and assured them that the nation stands with them. “The shock and pain is still so very raw,” he said. “My wife Jill and I are here to stand with you, grieve with you, pray with you, and let you know you are not alone.”
Biden, who has experienced personal tragedies in the past, including the loss of his first wife and daughter, and his son Beau to brain cancer, shared his own understanding of the pain and grief that the families are going through. “It’s not the same, but we know what it’s like to lose a piece of our soul,” he said.
The President also thanked the first responders for their bravery and directed his administration to provide any necessary assistance to complete the investigation. He also acknowledged the 35 people who were injured in the attack and wished them a speedy recovery.
