During his presidency, Donald Trump discussed the idea of the United States buying Greenland. Although Denmark owns Greenland, Trump showed interest in this large piece of land because of its strategic importance.
He even shared a humorous picture on social media, showing a big building with his name on it on Greenland’s coast, joking he wouldn’t do that.
Recently, this topic has come up again with some people supporting the idea and others opposing it. For instance, Mike Collins, a Republican Congressman from Georgia, shared a picture showing Greenland voting for the Republican party in a future election, calling it “Project 2029.” However, Rasmus Jarlov, a Danish parliament member, made it clear that Denmark is not planning to sell Greenland to anyone, including the U.S.
The idea of buying Greenland isn’t new. Back in 1945, Senator Owen Brewster from Maine mentioned that Greenland was crucial for military purposes, a sentiment echoed by American military leaders at the time.
If the U.S. ever bought Greenland, it would be the biggest territory expansion since buying the Louisiana area in 1803. However, as of now, there are no plans for such a purchase.
