In Lima, Peru, during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke with President Joe Biden. This was their first conversation in seven months, and possibly their last before President Trump takes office again in January 2025.
President Xi told President Biden that China is ready to keep the communication going, work together more, and handle any disagreements with the next U.S. administration.
President Biden emphasized the importance of continuing direct discussions between leaders once he leaves office. Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, also attended the meeting and shared these details.
Although President Biden has tried to reduce tensions with China, their latest meeting didn’t solve major issues like cybercrime, trade disagreements, Taiwan, the South China Sea, and Russia.
The talks also covered North Korea, which is getting closer to Russia and has even sent troops to help in the Ukraine war. This situation worries not only the U.S. but also Europe and China. President Biden highlighted that China has previously said the war in Ukraine shouldn’t get worse, and he urged China to use its influence to prevent any increase in the conflict, especially with more North Korean troops possibly getting involved.
