As the United States continues to count votes, the Republican Party, led by Donald Trump, holds a slight advantage in the race for control of the House of Representatives.
Currently, the Republicans have won 211 of the 435 seats, which is seven seats away from a majority, while 24 seats are still undecided, according to Edison Research. They also have a secure majority in the Senate with at least 53 seats.
Gaining full control of Congress would enable the Republicans to enact major policy changes including tax reductions, energy deregulation, and enhanced border security measures. However, if the Democrats manage to turn the tables by winning 18 of the remaining 24 House seats, they could significantly oppose Trump’s agenda.
In recent developments, Democrats have made significant gains in New York by winning two Republican-held seats.
Laura Gillen won against Republican Anthony D’Esposito in a part of the suburbs of New York City, and Josh Riley defeated Republican Marc Molinaro in the Catskills area of New York State.
With the Senate under Republican control, they will be able to approve Trump’s choices for various government positions, but they will need more votes to pass most laws quickly.
