Chicago – September 12, 2025

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has issued a stark warning that a government shutdown could occur at the end of September if Republicans do not meet Democrats’ key health care demands.

Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries have firmly stated they will not support any funding legislation that lacks critical health care provisions or assurances against their rollback, including the restoration of Medicaid cuts made in recent GOP tax and spending legislation.

Tensions are mounting as Republicans weigh a temporary funding measure to avoid a shutdown when the current fiscal year ends on September 30. Schumer contends that Democrats are now unified, in contrast with earlier divisions within the party, and argues that public polling indicates former President Donald Trump and Republicans will bear the blame if a shutdown ensues.

Meanwhile, Republicans insist that Schumer must present a concrete health care proposal, particularly regarding the extension of enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits.

The debate comes as partisan rifts deepen in the Senate and negotiations over government spending remain deadlocked.
