In a shocking move, Special Counsel Jack Smith has released a 174-page report detailing the investigation into President-elect Donald Trump’s alleged attempts to stay in power after losing the 2020 election. The report, dated January 7, reveals that Smith’s team had gathered enough evidence to convict Trump if the case went to trial.
However, due to Trump’s election to a second term in November, the case cannot move forward. The Constitution prohibits the continued indictment and prosecution of a President, making it impossible for the case to proceed.
The report sheds light on the investigation, which focused on charges that Trump tried to subvert the will of the voters who elected President Joe Biden in 2020. Trump was indicted in Washington, D.C., for allegedly conspiring to overturn the 2020 election with baseless claims of widespread fraud.
Smith argued that it was essential to bring the election-interference prosecution against Trump to protect the United States’ electoral process. He alleged that Trump tried to obstruct the country’s system for collecting, counting, and certifying the 2020 election results “through fraud and deceit.”
The release of the report has sparked controversy, with Trump responding on Truth Social, attacking Smith and the congressional committee that investigated the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
