Nawab Mir Ayoob delivered a talk on Reclaiming the public sphere in Neo- Liberal Hyderabad at SIO’s platform. He gave a detailed history of Hyderabad from the time of Mir Osman Ali and where Hyderabad is during present time.
He said that during Mir Osman’s 37-year rule, Hyderabad became a self sufficient and independent princely state. Electricity was introduced, and railways, roads, and airports were developed. He was known as the “Architect of modern Hyderabad” and is credited with establishing many public institutions in the city of Hyderabad, including Osmania University, Osmania General Hospital, State Bank of Hyderabad, Begumpet Airport, and the Hyderabad High Court.
After partition, Nizam didn’t want to join India and remain an independent state but due to internal wars and rebellion, his power became weak m. Ultimately, Hyderabad became a part of India’s Telangana. Later in 1956, the state joined Andhra Pradesh.
Now at present time Muslims form only 13% of Hyderabad’s population and have a dedicated quota of 4% which is unevenly distributed. There is a case currently being taken up in the Supreme Court as well.
While concluding his talk, he said that Muslims of the South need to think about forming a confederation that maintains the peace of the south. The people of the south are peaceful people and don’t want a repeat of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Andra Pradesh.
The South needs to strengthen their peaceful mindset and take Hyderabad forward.
