President Donald Trump’s highly anticipated tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China took effect Tuesday, sparking widespread concerns about a potential trade war. The tariffs, which range from 10% to 25%, will significantly impact imports from these countries.
Canada and Mexico will face a 25% tariff on their imports, while Canadian energy products will be subject to a 10% import duty. China, which had a 10% tariff imposed in February, will now face a 20% tariff. Beijing responded by imposing tariffs of up to 15% on US farm exports and expanding export controls on US companies.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will retaliate with tariffs on over $100 billion of American goods within 21 days. Mexico has yet to detail its response.
The tariffs aim to address drug trafficking and illegal immigration, but Trump has also linked their removal to closing the US trade imbalance. Economists warn that this move may lead to higher inflation and devastating trade wars.
