Chief Judge James Boasberg, who has drawn criticism from President Trump for his handling of a deportation case, will now oversee a new lawsuit involving the administration’s use of a messaging app to discuss military operations. The case stems from an incident where a reporter was accidentally added to a Signal group chat, where senior national security officials discussed plans to bomb Houthi targets in Yemen.
Intelligence experts have expressed surprise at the use of a group chat to discuss sensitive operational matters, with the White House denying that any classified information was shared. This latest development comes as Boasberg is already handling a high-profile case related to the Trump administration’s deportation of alleged Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador.
In that case, Boasberg imposed a temporary restraining order, which the administration is currently appealing. President Trump has publicly criticized Boasberg’s decision, calling him a “Radical Left Lunatic of a Judge” and suggesting that he should be impeached. However, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has countered that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreements over judicial decisions.
