Chicago – January 15, 2026
On January 13, 2026, the U.S. Trump administration officially labeled three branches of the Muslim Brotherhood — a major Islamist movement with chapters across the Middle East — as terrorist organizations and imposed sanctions on them.
Which Branches Were Designated
- Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood — designated as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) by the U.S. Treasury for providing support to extremist organizations like Hamas.
- Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood — also listed as an SDGT for alleged material support to terrorism.
- Lebanese Muslim Brotherhood (al-Jamaa al-Islamiyah) — designated by the U.S. State Department as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and an SDGT, which makes it illegal under U.S. law to provide it with material support.
