President Donald Trump has announced a series of high-profile events to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026, including a national youth sports competition called the “Patriot Games,” a UFC fight on the White House lawn, and plans for a new monument in Washington, DC.

Speaking in a video released Thursday by Freedom 250, a newly launched organization coordinating the anniversary celebrations, Trump outlined what he described as an ambitious and patriotic vision for the historic milestone. According to a news release, Freedom 250 is a national, non-partisan organization leading the administration’s efforts to celebrate America’s semiquincentennial.

What Are the Patriot Games?

The Patriot Games will be a four-day athletic competition held at the White House in the fall of 2026. Trump said the event will feature the top high school athletes from across the country, with one young man and one young woman representing each U.S. state and territory.

“This will be an unprecedented athletic event featuring the greatest high school athletes,” Trump said, emphasizing national pride and youth achievement as core themes of the competition. The event is expected to be televised and, according to Trump’s earlier comments in July, overseen by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

However, the announcement has drawn criticism from Democrats and social media users, some of whom have mocked the concept by comparing it to The Hunger Games, the dystopian novel and film franchise centered on televised competitions involving children. Supporters, meanwhile, argue the comparison is exaggerated and that the event is intended to celebrate athletic excellence and unity.

UFC Fight Planned on the White House Lawn

One of the most attention-grabbing elements of Trump’s anniversary plans is a live UFC event set to take place on June 14, 2026 which coincides with both Flag Day and Trump’s birthday. The event will be hosted by UFC President Dana White and feature championship fighters competing on the same night.

“On Flag Day, we will have a one-of-a-kind UFC event here at the White House,” Trump said. “It’ll be the greatest champion fighters in the world and it’s going to be something special.”

If carried out, the event would be unprecedented, marking the first time a professional mixed martial arts competition is held on the White House grounds.

New Arch Monument in Washington, DC

In addition to sporting events, Trump also announced plans to begin construction on a new arch monument in the nation’s capital. Comparing the proposed structure to Paris’s Arc de Triomphe, Trump said the United States deserves a similar landmark to commemorate its history and achievements.

“We are the only major place without a triumphal arc,” he said. “We’re going to have one in Washington, DC, very soon.”

Details regarding the design, funding, and timeline for the monument have not yet been released.

Federal Agencies Align With Anniversary Plans

Trump has long expressed interest in shaping the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations, and over the past year, federal agencies have increasingly aligned their initiatives with his vision. The administration has moved quickly to redirect funding and resources toward programs tied to patriotic themes and nationwide participation.

One such initiative is the Department of Agriculture’s support for the Great American State Fair, an idea Trump first introduced during the 2023 campaign trail. The program encourages states to compete for the title of “most patriotic” state fair, with Trump personally selecting the winner.

A Bold and Controversial Celebration

As plans for America’s 250th anniversary take shape, Trump’s proposals have sparked both enthusiasm and controversy. Supporters view the events as bold, uniquely American celebrations, while critics question their tone, symbolism, and use of federal resources.

With more than a year remaining before the anniversary, additional details and debates are likely to emerge as the administration continues to roll out its plans for one of the most significant milestones in U.S. history.
