Morning Edition: Trump Pushes Executive Order for Universal Voter ID

President Donald Trump says he is going to make a new rule about voting. He announced on his website that he will sign an executive order to require every single voter to show an ID. He also said he wants to stop almost all mail-in voting, only allowing it for people who are very sick or soldiers who are far away from home.

This idea comes from Trump’s long-standing claims that there were problems with the 2020 election, which he lost to Joe Biden. He often says, without proof, that there was widespread fraud and that non-citizens voted illegally. For a long time, he has also wanted to get rid of electronic voting machines and have everyone use paper ballots that are counted by hand, a method experts say is slow and can be less accurate.

However, it might not be that simple. Elections in the U.S. are run by the states, not the president. Many experts are unsure if Trump even has the power to create a national rule like this. This upcoming 2026 election is a big deal because it will be the first major vote on Trump’s policies since he became president again.
