U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited his long-running battle against Obamacare, urging Republican senators to redirect federal funds from health insurance subsidies to direct cash payments for individuals — a move he says would let Americans “buy their own, better healthcare.”
Posting on Truth Social, Trump blasted the Affordable Care Act (ACA) as “bad healthcare” and accused “money-sucking insurance companies” of profiting off taxpayers. He called for billions in federal subsidies to instead be “sent directly to the people,” allowing them to purchase coverage independently and “have money left over.”
The comments came as the U.S. government shutdown entered its 39th day, with Congress still deadlocked over budget negotiations. Trump’s proposal has gained backing from several Republican senators, including Lindsey Graham, James Lankford, and Rick Scott, though Democrats have dismissed the plan as unrealistic and politically motivated.
Democrats insist on renewing ACA subsidies that support more than 24 million Americans, while Republicans say reopening the government must come first. Trump also used the post to call for ending the Senate filibuster, a move critics say could deepen the partisan divide.
Policy experts note that Trump’s proposal would require full Congressional approval, making it unlikely to take effect soon. For now, Obamacare subsidies remain in place, though uncertainty over the shutdown continues to raise concerns about healthcare access for millions.
