President Donald Trump’s push to annex Greenland has sparked outrage from the island’s leaders and NATO ally Denmark. In a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump claimed that US control of Greenland is necessary for international security.
Trump’s comments were met with swift rejection from Greenland’s outgoing Prime Minister, Mute Egede, who stated, “Enough is enough.” Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the leader of Greenland’s pro-business Demokraatit party, also slammed Trump’s proposal, calling it “inappropriate”.
Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, has strategic importance due to its location and rich mineral resources. However, opinion polls suggest that most Greenlanders oppose joining the US, although a majority favor eventual independence from Denmark.
Trump’s bid to annex Greenland is not new, as he has been pushing for it since taking office. However, his latest comments suggest that he may want NATO involved in his attempt to take over the island.
