President Donald Trump’s plan to send National Guard troops and Marines to US cities has raised concerns among military leaders. They worry that the troops haven’t received proper training and that helping law enforcement could have serious social, political, and operational risks. In Los Angeles, army officials thought using troops to protect agents enforcing Trump’s immigration policies would be extremely risky for civilians, troops, and the military’s reputation.
There were fears that the operation could spark protests, riots, and even harm civilians, including children. These concerns came from internal military reports and messages revealed during a trial for a lawsuit by California Governor Gavin Newsom. Trump has already sent 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Los Angeles and National Guard troops to Washington. He’s also thinking about sending troops to other cities run by Democrats.
Trump’s decision breaks a long-standing tradition against using the military for domestic law enforcement, especially when local officials disagree. The move has sparked controversy, with some questioning the president’s authority to deploy troops to cities like Chicago and Baltimore.
