Harvard President Speaks Out Against Trump Administration
Harvard University President Alan Garber is pushing back against the Trump administration’s recent actions targeting the school. The administration froze over $2 billion in research grants and contracts and tried to revoke Harvard’s ability to enroll international students. Garber finds these measures “perplexing” and believes they hurt not just Harvard but the country as a whole. He points out that research funding is awarded to efforts deemed “high-priority work” by the federal government, and cutting it off would have negative consequences.

Research Funding Benefits the Country
Garber highlights the importance of Harvard’s research work, citing recent honors awarded to faculty for their work on obesity and diabetes drugs and gene editing. He argues that this research directly benefits the US public and should be supported. The Trump administration’s actions, however, seem to be motivated by claims that Harvard has failed to address antisemitism on campus. Garber acknowledges that there is work to be done but struggles to see the link between funding freezes and fighting antisemitism.

Harvard Sues the Federal Government
Harvard is suing the federal government over the funding freeze and the attempt to revoke its ability to enroll international students. The university refuses to change its policies around hiring and admissions or eliminate diversity programs as demanded by the Trump administration. Garber emphasizes that Harvard remains committed to its values and will continue to stand firm in what it believes in. The Trump administration’s actions have sparked a heated debate about the role of universities in promoting diversity and inclusion.
