A sharp disagreement has emerged between the White House and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz following a fatal shooting in Minneapolis involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, left a 37-year-old woman dead and sparked widespread concern among local residents.During separate press conferences on Thursday, federal officials and Minnesota’s governor offered conflicting accounts of the events and clashed over who should lead the investigation.Governor Walz firmly rejected federal oversight of the case, urging Washington to step aside and allow Minnesota authorities to handle the investigation independently. He argued that federal involvement would undermine public trust and fairness.
“Leave Minnesota alone,” Walz said, expressing discomfort with the federal government taking control of the inquiry. He emphasized that statements from top federal leaders had already framed the narrative, making it difficult for Minnesotans to believe the investigation would be impartial.
Walz specifically criticized comments made by President Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, saying their early judgments cast doubt on the possibility of an unbiased outcome. He also described the ICE operation in Minnesota as “reckless” and claimed it was increasing fear rather than improving public safety.
The shooting occurred when ICE agents, reportedly wearing masks, approached a vehicle driven by Renee Good. Video footage taken by a bystander appears to show Good attempting to drive away as agents surrounded her SUV. Moments later, one agent fired three shots into the driver’s side window, killing her. Good was a wife and mother, and her death has left the Minneapolis community shaken.
Federal officials quickly defended the ICE agent’s actions, stating that the use of force was justified. At the White House press briefing, Vice President Vance dismissed Walz’s concerns and insisted that the agent’s life was in immediate danger. “I don’t care what Tim Walz says,” Vance remarked, arguing that the situation involved an individual interfering with a lawful law enforcement operation. According to Vance, Good aimed her vehicle at an officer and accelerated, leaving the agent with no choice but to respond with lethal force.
