A state of emergency has been declared in South Carolina by Governor Henry McMaster, as the state struggles to contain hundreds of wildfires. The governor’s declaration aims to support wildfire response efforts and ensure first responders have the necessary resources.
According to the South Carolina Forestry Commission, nearly 5,000 acres have burned, with 170 fires reported. The dry conditions, high winds, and low humidity have contributed to the rapid spread of the fires.
The largest fire is located in Carolina Forest, a community 10 miles west of Myrtle Beach in Horry County. As of Sunday afternoon, the wildfire had incinerated 1,200 acres and was 0% contained. More than 400 firefighters are battling the blaze with at least 127 fire apparatus.
Fortunately, no structures have been lost, and no injuries have been reported. A statewide outdoor burning ban remains in effect, with violators facing prosecution.
