Chicago – November 16, 2025

The Assam government under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has resumed an extensive eviction and demolition drive targeting Bengali-speaking Muslim families in the Goalpara district. Over 580 houses were razed on forest land labeled as encroachments, displacing thousands of residents.

The state administration claims the operation aims to protect forest land and indigenous interests, characterizing the affected group as illegal settlers. However, the evictions have sparked widespread protests among Assamese people demanding rights and protection against what they call discriminatory and harsh government actions.

Thousands have taken to the streets, expressing outrage over the forced displacements that critics argue disproportionately target Muslims without offering rehabilitation. Despite opposition and concerns about legal and ethical standards, the state government insists that eviction operations will continue as part of its commitment to safeguard land and demographic balance.

The unfolding situation remains tense, with ongoing public protests highlighting deep social divisions in Assam.
