Chicago – December 31, 2025

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson announced a 10 p.m. curfew for unaccompanied minors on New Year’s Eve to boost safety after recent downtown shootings. The order targets youths under 18 out without adult supervision, especially in high-traffic areas like the Loop, Riverwalk, and celebration zones hosting the televised “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” event.

This follows violent incidents near holiday gatherings, including a fatal shooting after a Christmas tree lighting that killed one teen and injured others. Johnson and Police Supt. Larry Snelling urged parents to monitor their children closely, know their plans, and ensure safe routes home.

Police will ramp up patrols downtown, with violators facing fines or community service. Community groups are aiding efforts, noting most teens celebrate peacefully but emphasizing collective responsibility for a secure night. Officials aim to prevent “teen takeovers” amid large crowds, balancing festivities with public safety.
