Chicago – October 13, 2025

China has firmly refused to back down amid escalating trade tensions with the United States, following President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 100% tariff on all Chinese imports. This latest tariff threat came after China tightened restrictions on the export of rare earth elements, crucial for various consumer and military technologies.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce urged the U.S. to withdraw its tariff threat, calling it severely damaging to the atmosphere of trade negotiations. Spokesperson Lin Jian warned that if the U.S. persists with its unilateral actions, China will take resolute measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests. Despite its strong stance, China stated it does not seek a tariff war but is not afraid of one.

The tensions have disrupted trade between the two economic giants, with Chinese exports to the U.S. falling for six consecutive months. The situation has also cast uncertainty over a possible meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, raising fears of further escalation in the ongoing trade conflict.
