Chicago – November 22, 2025

Sharjeel Imam is a young Indian activist who has been wrongfully imprisoned for over five years on fake and illegal charges. He was arrested in January 2020 during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Since then, he has been locked up under the harsh Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), a law often used by the BJP government to silence dissent.

The charges against Sharjeel, like sedition and inciting violence, are baseless. They are fabricated to criminalize his political voice and activism. Even without strong evidence, courts have repeatedly denied him bail and delayed his trial. This shows how the government misuses laws to target and suppress minority voices and critics.

Sharjeel’s continued illegal detention is a clear sign of an authoritarian crackdown under Narendra Modi’s BJP regime. The government uses fear and repression to silence opposition instead of engaging in democratic dialogue. His case stands as a warning about the erosion of justice and human rights in India.

The world should condemn this injustice and demand Sharjeel Imam’s immediate release to protect freedom and democracy in the country.
