The Trump administration is exploring lump-sum payments to Greenland’s residents to encourage secession from Denmark and potential alignment with the United States, four sources familiar with internal discussions revealed. U.S. officials, including White House aides, have floated per-person amounts from $10,000 to $100,000, with the higher figure equating to nearly $6 billion for the island’s 57,000 inhabitants.

Discussions, ongoing but recently intensified, stem from President Trump’s repeated emphasis on Greenland’s strategic national security value, stating on Air Force One, “We need Greenland… Denmark isn’t going to be able to do it”. Options include a Compact of Free Association (COFA), similar to pacts with Pacific nations, potentially post-independence referendum.

Greenlandic authorities in Nuuk and Copenhagen insist the territory is not for sale, while polls show locals favor independence from Denmark but overwhelmingly oppose U.S. integration. Critics warn the approach risks appearing transactional amid Greenland’s economic reliance on Danish subsidies.
