President Donald Trump convened his Cabinet on Thursday for a televised meeting that focused on his administration’s achievements, with members offering public praise as he reviewed ongoing policy efforts. The meeting came amid heightened tensions on Capitol Hill, where Democrats blocked a Republican-backed funding bill covering the Department of Homeland Security and several other agencies.
The 45–55 procedural vote underscored deep divisions over Trump’s push for tougher immigration enforcement. With government funding set to expire Friday, Democrats have warned that a partial shutdown is possible unless a new funding deal is reached.
Speaking to reporters during the Cabinet session, Trump said his administration was working toward an agreement to avoid a shutdown. “We don’t want a shutdown,” he said, adding that negotiators were exploring a short-term measure to fund homeland security separately while broader talks continue.
