Chicago – Janaury 15, 2026

U.S. President Donald Trump warned he would invoke the Insurrection Act to deploy military forces in Minnesota if local officials fail to stop protesters from assaulting ICE agents. The threat, posted on Truth Social, targets “professional agitators and insurrectionists” amid escalating unrest in Minneapolis following two recent ICE-related shootings.

Tensions ignited after ICE fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good on January 7, sparking nationwide demonstrations against federal immigration enforcement. A second incident on January 14 saw an agent wound a Venezuelan national in the leg during an apprehension, leading to clashes with fireworks, rocks, and tear gas. Nearly 3,000 federal officers patrol the city under Operation Metro Surge, despite local opposition.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey deemed the situation “untenable,” urging ICE withdrawal, while Governor Tim Walz called for de-escalation. The 1807 Insurrection Act allows presidential military deployment domestically, invoked rarely in history. Trump has reiterated readiness to use it previously.
