Senator Bernie Sanders sharply criticized prominent New York Democratic leaders, including Governor Kathy Hochul, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, for their refusal to endorse Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor.

Speaking at a town hall in Brooklyn alongside Mamdani, Sanders described the lack of support as “absurd” and expressed difficulty understanding why party leaders would not back a candidate who has energized a large volunteer base and attracted young and nontraditional voters.

Sanders emphasized that Mamdani, a progressive democratic socialist, represents the future direction of the Democratic Party and called on Democrats to unite behind him to counter challenges from independent candidates and Republicans.

The event highlighted Mamdani’s progressive platform, which includes rent freezes and corporate tax increases, and aimed to bolster his campaign ahead of the November general election. Sanders warned of a critical fight for the party’s future if leaders continue to withhold support.

This stance comes amid ongoing political tensions as Mamdani faces attacks from President Trump and skepticism within Democratic ranks.
