President Joe Biden has granted a full pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, for his firearms and tax convictions, despite previously stating he wouldn’t use his presidential powers to help his family.
Hunter Biden was convicted in June for illegally buying and possessing a gun, with his drug use and family issues highlighted during the trial. In September, he admitted to nine tax offenses related to failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes while spending large amounts of money on things like escorts, cars, and drugs.
Biden defended his decision, claiming that Hunter had been unfairly targeted because of his family name. This move has sparked anger from Republicans, accusing the president of hypocrisy for breaking his promise and using his power to protect his son.
Some Democrats, like Colorado Governor Jared Polis, expressed disappointment, saying the pardon could damage Biden’s reputation.
While presidents have pardoned family members, such as Bill Clinton pardoning his brother in 2001, Biden’s pardon is particularly wide-ranging. It covers not just his current convictions but any future charges from 2014 to Sunday, including Hunter’s time with Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company. Biden’s decision adds to his presidency’s political challenges in its final days.
