Several major companies are quietly ending or changing their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. Companies like Walmart, Amazon, Facebook, Disney, Google, Pepsi, and others have removed references to DEI from their latest annual reports, according to an NPR analysis.
A year ago, these companies included mentions of diversity and inclusion in their reports, but now, many have stopped using these terms altogether. Some companies have even dropped all mentions of diversity in their filings.
These changes come after President Trump ordered an end to DEI programs in the federal government and for its contractors, which includes many large companies. Conservative critics argue that DEI programs are unfair to non-minorities, putting additional pressure on businesses to reconsider their efforts.
The companies making these changes include big names like GM, Intel, Chipotle, Comcast, and Philip Morris. While many haven’t explained why they made these changes, some say they are reassessing their DEI programs in light of the current political and business environment.
According to Shiva Rajgopal, a professor at Columbia University, companies often avoid announcing such changes to avoid controversy. Most of the adjustments are happening quietly behind the scenes.
