The premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, has warned that Canada might stop sending energy and critical minerals to the U.S. if President-elect Donald Trump follows through with a plan to impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian and Mexican products. Trump suggested this tariff to stop illegal immigration and the flow of drugs into the U.S.
Ford said that Canada’s provinces are looking at ways to retaliate if Trump moves ahead with the tariffs. Some officials have already identified key products that Canada exports to the U.S., including critical minerals and metals, which the U.S. heavily depends on. These could be part of Canada’s response to the tariff.
In 2019, Canada was the largest supplier of energy to the U.S., according to the Energy Information Administration. If Ford’s threat is carried out, it could impact U.S. access to these important resources, leading to a major trade dispute between the two countries.
