In a significant political move, National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah announced on Thursday that his party has teamed up with Congress to contest all 90 Assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir. This is the first time the region will hold Assembly elections since becoming a Union Territory.
The announcement came after a meeting in Srinagar between Abdullah, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and Rahul Gandhi, the Opposition leader in the Lok Sabha. The elections will be held in three phases: September 18, 25, and October 1, with the results expected on October 4.
Speaking to Jammu party members, Rahul Gandhi expressed hope that the coalition will respect and value its members. Earlier, in Srinagar, he mentioned that this was the first time since Independence that a state had been downgraded to a Union Territory.
