Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser said Monday that she had a positive meeting with President-elect Donald Trump to discuss their shared goals for the city. Despite their past disagreements, especially during the 2020 George Floyd protests, Bowser said they want D.C. to be “the best, most beautiful city in the world.”
The Democratic mayor explained that she and Trump discussed ways to work together, focusing on the federal workforce, unused government buildings, parks, and improving infrastructure. Bowser expressed hope that they will continue to find common ground in Trump’s second term and are looking forward to a successful inauguration on January 20.
This tone marks a shift from their past tensions. In 2020, Bowser and Trump clashed over how to handle protests and riots in D.C., with Bowser declaring a portion of a street near the White House as “Black Lives Matter Plaza.”
Bowser’s statement also referred to crime in the city. In recent months, congressional staffers and even a member of Congress have been victims of carjackings and other violent crimes. Trump has promised to address rising crime rates in D.C. and other cities during his second term.
