Chicago – January 03, 2025

House Speaker Mike Johnson faces a challenging fight to keep his position this Friday, despite having support from President-elect Donald Trump. Johnson has been struggling with maintaining his role due to some disagreements within his party, particularly related to government spending decisions.

The 119th Congress is kicking off with a vote to choose the House Speaker, and this event is drawing extra attention because it will be televised by C-SPAN, giving people a closer look at the action on the House floor.

Johnson can only lose support from one Republican if all members vote, and already one member, Representative Thomas Massie from Kentucky, has said he will not support Johnson. Other Republicans have also expressed doubts, though none have made a firm decision against him like Massie.

Representative Tim Burchett from Tennessee shared with Fox News Digital that he is still deciding and plans to discuss his concerns with Johnson.

This vote is crucial as it not only tests Johnson’s leadership but also President-elect Trump’s influence over the new Congress. Moreover, the outcome is essential for the incoming president, as historically, a president’s election has never been certified without a speaker in place.
