Arizona Democrats had a strong showing in the past, partly due to opposition to Donald Trump. But with Trump back in the 2024 race, some Democrats are worried that Joe Biden might struggle to win in this key state.
Biden’s standing in Arizona polls was already weak before a debate mishap increased concerns within the party. Then, an attempted assassination of Trump further complicated the race.
Despite Biden’s determination to continue, two Arizona Democrats in Congress have suggested he should withdraw. “They are seeing the chances of Arizona being a deciding state slipping away,” said Doug Wilson, a campaign expert who helped turn Arizona blue for Bill Clinton in 1996.
Arizona, once a reliably Republican state, has become a major battleground. Biden won the state by fewer than 11,000 votes in 2020, the closest margin of any state. Since then, Democrats have secured tight wins in various positions. However, some Democrats fear it might not be enough for Biden to win again.
