Chicago – May 17, 2025

Powerful storms and tornadoes swept through parts of the Midwest and South on Friday night, causing major damage and loss of life. Many people have died, and buildings were destroyed across several states.

In Kentucky, Governor Andy Beshear reported on Saturday that at least 18 people had been killed. He visited London, Kentucky, which was severely damaged by the storms, and planned to speak to the public later that evening. Kristen Mosley, a local resident, shared that although her home was safe, many of her neighbors faced “total devastation,” with trees uprooted and houses torn apart.

Missouri was also hit hard, with at least seven people confirmed dead. Five of the deaths occurred in the St. Louis area, and two more were reported in a rural part of the state. St. Louis Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson mentioned that more than 30 people were injured, though the number could be even higher.

The storms also caused widespread power outages, leaving nearly half a million people without electricity across several states, from Missouri to Maryland.
