James Comey, former Director of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, has pleaded not guilty to charges of making false statements to lawmakers and obstructing a congressional proceeding. His lawyer, Patrick Fitzgerald, entered the plea on his behalf during a federal court appearance in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday. Fitzgerald plans to seek dismissal of the case, citing multiple reasons, including claims of political targeting due to Comey’s criticism of former President Donald Trump.
The indictment came shortly after Trump publicly urged his Attorney General to take action against Comey. A judge set the trial for January 5, following Comey’s request for a speedy trial. Both the prosecution and defense anticipate the trial will last only two to three days.
In court, Fitzgerald stated that they would file motions to dismiss, arguing that the prosecution was vindictive and that a U.S. attorney had been improperly appointed to oversee the case. Initially, the case had been managed by Virginia prosecutor Erik Siebert, who resigned under pressure from Trump after a failed investigation. Trump later appointed Lindsey Halligan to take over the case. Comey appeared in good spirits, accompanied by his family.
