Chicago – July 24, 2025

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will officially recognize Palestine as a state. He made this statement in a message shared on social media ahead of his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in September.

Macron explained that this decision reflects France’s long-standing commitment to supporting a fair and lasting peace in the Middle East. He emphasized the need to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza and prioritize the safety of civilians. Macron also called for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian aid to reach those in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and the demilitarization of Hamas.

In his message, Macron stressed that for peace to be achieved, it is essential to create a viable Palestinian state. He also pointed out that this state must recognize Israel and work to ensure the security of the entire Middle East.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot shared that the French consul in Jerusalem delivered a letter from Macron to the Palestinian Authority, expressing France’s decision. Barrot also stated he would confirm this commitment at the United Nations. Palestinian Authority Vice President Hussein Al Sheikh thanked Macron for the letter, which was sent to President Mahmoud Abbas.
