Heavy rains in Texas on Sunday caused a pause in the search for victims of last week’s deadly flooding along the Guadalupe River. The search had been ongoing for a week, but the new storms forced officials to stop temporarily as they warned that the rains could cause rivers to rise again.
This is the first time the severe weather has interrupted the search since the July Fourth floods, which killed at least 129 people. Authorities believe that more than 160 people are still missing in Kerr County.
In Kerrville, where some officials are being questioned about how well they warned residents, local teams went door-to-door early Sunday morning to let people know more flooding could happen. They also sent alerts to phones in the area.
Ingram Fire Department ordered search teams to leave the Guadalupe River area in Kerr County due to the risk of flash floods. They planned to restart the search on Monday, depending on the river’s level. The National Weather Service warned that the Guadalupe River could rise to nearly 15 feet, which is five feet above flood stage.
