Over 10 students from Jamia Millia Islamia University were detained by the Delhi Police after protesting against the university’s actions against two PhD students. The students had been issued show-cause notices for allegedly organizing a protest last year.
The protest started on Monday, with students criticizing what they called the university’s “crackdown on student activism.”
The university said the students damaged university property, including the central canteen, and broke the gate of the security advisor’s office, which led the administration to take action.
Police sources said that the university asked for help from the police to remove the students and restore order. Some of the protestors are now sitting outside the Kalkaji police station, claiming that 20 students are missing and that the authorities are not sharing information about where the detained students are.
A protestor said, “Multiple students from Jamia were taken from the campus at around 5 am, and their whereabouts are still unknown.” Some students involved in the protest said they also received suspension letters from the university.
