U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris addressed over 6,000 Black women at a rally on Wednesday, urging them to help boost the Democratic presidential campaign ahead of Donald Trump’s return to the campaign trail.
Harris, the first Black and Asian American woman to serve as vice president, spoke at an event in Indianapolis hosted by the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, founded at her alma mater, Howard University. If she wins against former President Trump, 78, she would make history as the first woman president.
Harris is looking to energize the Democratic race and inspire new enthusiasm among Democrats. She aims to leverage the sororities’ multi-generational network of Black women, who were crucial in Biden’s 2020 victory, to ensure strong voter turnout for Democrats in November.
The Harris campaign announced that since Sunday, it has raised $126 million, with 64% of donors contributing for the first time in the 2024 campaign.
